ECOVILLAGE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

STORYPATHWAYS

STORYPATHWAYS INSTRUCTION

Please tell us about the type of social enterprise that could be linked with bamboo, agriculture (for example, vegetables, fruit),  working with chickens and other animals in respectful ways, creating arts, crafts.

Please think of this as a diary entry that you will share with others in the community to aid in the setting up and managing of your social enterprise. Please think about social, economic and environmental potential and pitfalls ( pluses and minuses that can support or hinder social enterprises .

For examples:
  1. What we have
  2. What we need
  3. What we will add
  4. What we will discard
  5. Turning points (self-reflection)
  6. Barriers

1) WHAT WE HAVE

We  have the following things in our community  –  understanding of human and animal  rights, understanding that women are strong and can grow and harvest bamboo, respect for biodiversity, fear for the future/ hope for the future, a confidence, or lack of confidence / community support, responsibility to care for others and very high levels of stress.

Sharing experience   about social enterprise , for example:

Today it rained and  we  put fertiliser on our crops, meanwhile others were collecting bamboo to make a fence to protect the chickens. The  chicken manure is helpful for the vegetables.

We are also collecting seeds from XXX trees and planting them in the nursery which is in the garden enclosure.

We have the following difficulties, we need to protect the vegetables from birds and we must find netting to place over the vegetables

2) WHAT WE NEED

We need  the following to help our social enterprise .

Sharing experience   about social enterprise  :

We need a sewing machine to make masks so that we can teach the young ones how to sew and we can also sell the masks to cover the costs and to make a small profit which can be used for buying netting for the vegetables and collected as a fund to support our on line data costs…..

We need to be trained in how to do book keeping and ask for on line training or a program where we can run the books for each of our social enterprises.

Each little sub business needs to be managed as part of the co-operative

3) WHAT WE WILL ADD

We  will add to our  social enterprise  – more community supports from a range of services and /or more community engagement to lobby for resources, more connection to nature

Sharing experience   about social enterprise  :

So we are looking for training in book keeping ,  marketing  and gender mainstreaming , women's rights

Date by when new action will be completed

4) WHAT WE WILL DISCARD

  • We will discard– a sense of hopelessness , a sense of entitlement , excessive consumption My own story  about social enterprise is  :

  • Sharing experience   about social enterprise  :

We will discard the idea that women cannot do certain things, we can work well together and with the men in our community if we learn about gender mainstreaming

Date by when new action will be completed

5) TURNING POINTS

Self-reflection on the turning points for the better or worse – hope that consumption can be replaced with greater sense of attachment to others and the environment

Sharing experience   about social enterprise  :

We need to collect the rain water more efficiently and we need to buy a large storage tank. We can make pipes and gutters out of bamboo.

So we need to have careful book keeping so that the Co-op can buy rain tanks for our vegetables that will grow withing the bamboo enclosures near each house.

Date by when new action will be completed

6) BARRIERS

  • Consideration of the barriers that currently exist and consideration of what could be done to set up social enterprise

  • Sharing experience   about social enterprise  :

Life long learning, sharing and growing partnerships will enable us to overcome the barriers
